What to Expect When Euthanizing Your Pet at Maritime Animal Hospital
Making a decision to euthanize your pet is very difficult. Hence, we have developed a protocol to ensure things go as smoothly as possible. We have something called as Quality of Life assessment scale which is available upon request. This assessment scale can be used to decide the right time to consider euthanizing your pet.
We recommend you to book an appointment so that we can be ready for when you arrive. When you arrive at our hospital, we ensure to create a comfortable environment for you and your pet by providing a couch and a blanket for your pet to lie on. Our team tends to finish the paperwork first, that includes signing a consent form, discussing aftercare for your pet, and payment of the invoice. Once this is done, we will discuss the procedure and your preferences with you. We will then move ahead with the procedure and it’s completely left to you if you want to stay with your pet or leave after sedation.
In order to decrease the stress for you and your pet, we opt for sedation. This can be very beneficial because your pet will become all calm and sleepy over a few minutes after sedation. Once your pet is sedated, he or she will be brought to the treatment room for placement of an IV catheter by the technician and an assistant and will be brought back to the comfort room. The veterinarian will then administer the euthanasia solution through the IV catheter when you are ready.
At Maritime Animal Hospital, the medication which we use for euthanasia is a barbiturate which causes loss of consciousness first. Loss of consciousness means your pet will not be aware of anything that happens after this. After this, the respiration and the heartbeat are also depressed until the breathing has stopped. At times, your pet’s muscles may contract or urine may be released. Most animals do not close their eyes as the relaxed position for eyelids is open. There are chances that there will be a gasp or two after your pet dies. This comes from the reflex in the brain that tells the body to take another breath.
We offer two cremation options. One is a communal cremation wherein no ashes are returned and the other is a private cremation where your pet’s ashes will be returned to you in a temporary urn. Our cremation services are provided by Forget Me Not Pet Aftercare. You may also purchase an urn or a clay paw print. If you live outside the city or town limits, home burial is an option you can consider.
Wellness
Regular wellness visits are considered to be one of the most important aspects of your pet’s health. This is because it helps us to monitor your pet's health and also provide preventative services like vaccines to eliminate many diseases. At our hospital, we offer a wide variety of wellness programs that cover your pet from kitten and puppyhood through the senior years. Our services include physical exams, vaccination programs, deworming, flea and tick prevention and more. We also offer behavioural and nutritional counselling in order to help your pet enjoy a happy and healthy life.
Diagnostics
Not all diseases can be seen above the skin and not all symptoms are noticed until they reach a higher stage. Hence, regular and appropriate diagnosis plays a major role in giving your pet a healthy life with the required precautionary measures. Diagnosis reveals a lot about your pet’s health and helps us uncover the root cause of certain symptoms and accurately diagnose the illness or disease they have. You can come to us when you are in need of comprehensive diagnostic services for your pet, including digital radiology and ultrasounds. We also feature an on-site laboratory that lets us assess your pet’s results quickly and accurately.
